Hi, I have transferred from New Members via the Steam Room.

Did you know that there is scientific evidence that progressive resistance training in controlled RA improves both fatigue and pain scores?
I invite anyone who wants to record their fitness activities here to do so. It's for everyone's benefit and support so long as you are following your own prescribed activity pattern as sanctioned by your rheumy team. It's no competition but Lorna is setting a great example here.

Today, I went to a Pilates session. The first one I tried, about 2 months ago, knackered me out so that I had to even take daytime rest for 2 or 3 days. I must be making progress.

I had to avoid exercises which involved leaning on the hands as they remain icky. In fact, I went in to the class with some pain, wondering whether I should take a mild pain-killer. But an hour later, I came out full of endorphins and well-being and had not remembered the pain until now that I type. The teacher was very matter of fact and when she asked whether any one had any conditions a couple of people raised their hand. I just said that I had to avoid exercises using the wrists but that I was under physiotherapy care and knew what to avoid. Later on, she came over to me to give me an alternative when other people got to do press ups later on and she gave someone else advice on how to avoid neck exercises because of her own problems there.

Hi Alice,

Thanks for that comment, I am trying hard, Its just took 20 years to get motivated. Thanks for being the one to inspire me Smile

Got up today feeling good. It is so warm here 30c today. We were down at a lake the girls were in the water, they had lots of fun. I walked quite a distance to get there and back so that was my exercise today. Its so hot this evening no breeze at all, we have a fan on to keep cool, not used to this at all. Smile Hope your feeling a bit better today. Take care Lorna x Blushing me sunburned ha ha

Hi, there. Because of the flare-up, I was only able to walk 45 minutes yesterday before my ankles started hurting. I have learned not be disheartened by these setbacks: the overall curve of improvement, despite the peaks and troughs, is UP!!!

Today was supposed to be a rest day but walked in leisurely manner round a lovely national park. Not for long before my ankles started hurting again. But this was only in the "second walk", after we had had lunch. I slept more than 2 hours this afternoon to catch up with my strength. He, he.

Well we had rain and a thunder storm to clear the air, it was so thick with the heat, so i have had a lazy day today. Hope your ankles are a bit better, I have ached a bit with the damp weather, nothing too bad though. It was hot and sunny later on so felt better then. Positive vibes to all Lorna x Smile

Hi Alice,

My name is Katie and have had RA for 4 years. I cycled to the gym today then attended a body pump class. I attend about 4 classes a week. Plus always use the gym before.

Hi, Katie! Body pump classes four times a week? In addition to cycling? I am mighty impressed and delighted to hear of it. That's a goal I haven't reached yet but just ask me later this yearSmile But do tell me, because I've been considering buying a bike. Does it not hurt your hands?

Getting better day by day. But I was a little concerned early this morning as I had a session with a personal trainer to measure my fitness. My knees and my elbows were sore but with the adrenaline, I forgot all about them! We deferred the fitness measurement til next week and today he showed me some fun skiing exercises with a stability ball and a bosu ball.

Hi everyone,

I did lots of walking today again, I have tried to do something each day I have been away. I really want to keep this up, have also been watching what I eat while away in Norway.

You should have heard the thunder storm we had during the night. Its the worst they have seen in 15 years, there was 11,000 strikes in Oslo, It was lighting up the sky at my daughter´s house and the rain was unreal, running like a river down her drive. Love to all Lorna x Smile

Hi Alice,

I sufferer with my hands too but wear a splint when exercising. I am unable to do any form of press ups or tricep dips so use a bar instead. I did have to give up the gym for a year but swam lots. I found this so frustrating as i have always been active.
I am full steam ahead now and even if im tired or in pain i still go to the gym. Even if im just on the treadmill walking,or sat on a bike i feel so much better. I always think yes im in pain but would rather be in the gym as 9 times out of 10 its better than worrying about it at home.
I understand im pretty lucky at the mo but you never know whats around the corner with this disease. But as i can get out of bed theres nothing stopping me.

Katie x

P.s off to step tonight at 6

You have all cheered me up no end. I love hearing about positive people who, despite the odds, go out there and do what they can. As for me, there's not much I can do today with hand weights as my fingers are playing me up again Sad It's rest day anyway so I shall cosy up on this rainy, stormy evening in front of the tele. MMM, haven't done it for yonks. What a treat.

Alice

PS May be I'll watch some fitness videosLaugh

Dearest Barbara

What a long day you work. 7.30 to 5pm? Surely that's against European Work Directives. Or do you mean those are the times you are away from home?

I work during school hours and go to the gym on my way to work at 7am twice a week. The third gym session is at the week-end or at home with weights.

Remember this is not a competition though, and it's only about encouraging each other in going on with the exercise.

I find graded exercise particularly motivating i.e. actually measuring the time you spend doing the walking to work or whatever it is, and increasing it by 10% per week.

All my best wishes.

Alice

Hi All,

I did lots of walking today around Frederikstad this time, actually was really bothered with fatigue in my legs on the way home, im ok now though thank goodness.

Barbara you are doing really well with all the work you do with children, along with the fact your medication is not stabilised yet. I work with kids too and the running about you can do after them is a workout in itself. It´s no wonder you are exhausted at night. Smile

Katie I am also positive I have been since I was really ill 3 years ago, I made up my mind RA was not going to beat me either. I keep really well now as long as I don´t do to much but it was along haul in the beginning. Keep focused everyone and do only what you can. Smile Lorna x

Hi Alice, Katie Lorna, 7.30am-5pm are the hours that I actuaally work with the children. I am a childminder for two little ones and the parents need to travel to and from work for their working day. I am self employed so I dont think in comes in with any directives, most childminders work a 10hour day as a matter of course. Yes, I do lots of walking, and my RA is not controlled at the moment. But I cant ever imagine doing that much exercise even if it was!!! Its amazing what can be done with determination. Smile
